Lon's Birthday Card

If there is one thing I have no stomach for it's generic cards so I write my own. Childish I know, but at least it shows I put in the effort.

I never mind if I get a generic card so long as someone said something on the thing. A card from the store with no inscription belongs in the trash bin.

  1. One might say its endearing... Also, it gives you the chance to convey the exact message you wanted. So rarely do generic cards say what you really want to say. Either they are over the top with their mushiness or the don't say enough at all. I love trying to pick out a father's day card... "Dad, you're the best father in the world!" Me: "well, that's a load of crap. I don't want to lie to the man...." I almost bought him a card one year that said "You're like a father to me..." Just because it felt more accurate... I would appreciate a handmade card. As a mom, I get a lot of them... Wish adults would put as much thought into it that kids do.

    1. I’ve never been one to give out a lot of cards to be honest. I never felt right about them. Another big problem for me is that my hand writing can be something of an issue so I rarely hand write notes. Making cards was the solution.

Even then my cards feel sterile and cold so I go around with a big lot of colored pens and ask everyone to sign them to give them that color. Results are mixed, but I can tell you in the case of Lon I have never seen her that happy.

Lon is a woman who works hard every day to do good in this world. For folks like her we need to show respect and this is one simple way.

  2. I used to be. I could write long letters in tiny print in cards. Now I have a box of old cards in my closet that I don't quite know what to do with, but I can't bring myself to get rid of. Heaven knows cards aren't inexpensive. It seems a waste to get rid of them. I have a friend who is an older lady who is just beside herself if she can't get out to the store to find me that perfect card. Another older lady still complains about the invention of e-cards and insists on sending me birthday cards. Give me something hand drawn any day. Something I will want to preserve and put in a scrapbook. I think its sweet that you were able to touch this person and show her that her hard work is noticed. We should take the time to show people they are appreciated.

At this point, you are probably wondering who the heck I am! I ended up here doing a search for something and your page has remained in my phone's browser history. I find what you have to say compelling and you've reinforced something within myself that we should all be reminded of time and time again.

    1. I do admit the question crossed my mind but I'm just happy you're here.
