Sorting at the Ocean (Math All Around) by Jennifer Roy and Gregory Roy

Sorting at the Ocean (Math All Around) by Jennifer Roy and
Gregory Roy is a book that gives you a basic idea of how to sort animals into categories. This is a great book for the future biologist as every biology student will need to attend a lecture on the subject but as for the laymen it's not all that great.

It will however entertain your child with images of the see.

Who should read this book? future biologists

'How do They Help? The Salvation Army' by Katie Marsico Book Review

'How do They Help? The Salvation Army' by Katie Marsico is a
book that tells the story of The Salvation Army and all the good they do for people.

Having dealt with the organization I can say that there is a good deal they left out. The job training programs in my own state of California are worth mentioning.

Then this is a children's book and it is often hard to go into depth on the subject.

Who should read this book? Anyone.

What's Up Richard - 1998 Yearbook Signature

What's Up Richard,

What can I say man, you are a very unique person, but I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that. I hope I can think of something really meaningful to write, because right now I'm writing exactly what's on my mind. As for girls, don't worry about that they'll come to you when you're not even trying. Either that or you'll find someone just as you're giving up. Thog? I hope you finally finish him up and publish is stories. Conan is the most barbaric person I've met in my dreams, but even he is dwarfed by the brutal might of Thog! I wish you the best of luck in everything, Richard

Line graphs by Sherra G. Edgar Book Review

Line graphs by Sherra G. Edgar is a book bout line graphs which is
a good topic for a young child to know given that we use them in every day life.

I will point out that I don't think I ever needed explanation in what a line graph is but then I have an I.Q. of a hundred and thirty so that's no big feet.

All in all, not a bad book for your children.

Who should read this book? the children of parents who want them to do well in math.

Strawberry Bullfrog: Fun with Compound Words by Laura Hambleton and Sedat Turhan

'Strawberry Bullfrog: Fun with Compound Words' by Laura
Hambleton  and Sedat Turhan is a book that gives you the basic idea of the concept of compound words. It gives you the idea that compound words are made from other words and that they may not be the some of those words.

After that, this is a book with bright colors and fun images, but not much in the way of substance. This is a great book for preschoolers with it's simple idea and direct information.

All in all, this is a good book for very young children who still have trouble reading.

Who should read this book? Preschool children

Bug Homes by Charlotte Guillain Book Review

'Bug Homes' by Charlotte Guillain is a book about the structures
that bugs like insects and arachnids build and live in. It is a book written for very young readers that gives a shallow interpretation of the facts. This is unavoidable as the target audience just can't absorb that kind of information right away.

Anyone hoping that their children will get into this kind of biology would do very well to get them this book to build on their knowledge.

I, as an adult, took very little away from this book, but your child should get a lot more than I.

Who should read this book? Preschool children

'The Twentieth Century and the Harlem Renaissance' by Stuart A. Kallen Book Review

'The Twentieth Century and the Harlem Renaissance: A History of
Black People in America, 1880-1930 (African American History)' by Stuart A. Kallen is a collection of short biographies that tell the story of many African Americans who have made great contributions to our great American culture.

It should be noted that this book is on the older side of things and so the terminology may be considered dated. This book is so important that the library will only let you keep it for a week. In that week I learned a good number of things that surprised me and even more that I would like further study on.

Who should read this book? Lovers of history

The Big Dipper by Joseph Stanley Book Review

Much like in the book 'The Little Dipper' 'The Big Dipper' by
Joseph Stanley is a book about the constellation that goes into both its placement and the history behind that pattern of stars.

Where this book is lacking is that it covers almost everything from its counterpart book and gives you very little in the way of new information.

If you're looking to own a book both are of equal value, and they make good bed time stories.

Who should read this book? Those who love the stars.

Prepositions (Language Rules!) by Ann Heinrichs

Prepositions (Language Rules!) by Ann Heinrichs is a book about
the English language. The subject being prepositions makes it a little hard for me to take in the data so it's one of those books I'd like to hold on to because I have so much trouble with the topic.

After that, all the books in this set are learning books with fun imagery that will make children happy just by looking at them. They are very well made and the slick cover is stain resistant.

Who should read this book? Everyone.

Karl and Carolina Uncover the Parts of a Book by Sandy Bridget Donovan

'Karl and Carolina Uncover the Parts of a Book' by Sandy Bridget
Donovan is a book that uses dinosaurs to teach children about books. This is a great idea and very funny.

The art work is surreal and the information is well related so I have to give this book both thumbs up. This was a fun read and a great book for children and book lovers.

Who should read this book? Everyone.

Because by Mikhail Baryshnikov Book Review

'Because' by Mikhail Baryshnikov is the story of a person with a
crazy grandmother who does all these strange things and when asked why says 'because'. This is one of those books that uses repetition to teach you how to spell because, and I'm all for that because I still forget.

After that, this is a book full of fun images that will make your child laugh. This is a good wake up book for after nap time, but not a great bedtime story as it will not put your child to sleep.

Who should read this book? Everyone

Slow Down for Manatees by Jim Arnosky

'Slow Down for Manatees' by Jim Arnosky is an interpretation of
true events that happened to one of our beloved sea cows. If your child is not well antiquated with this animal then this is a must read book for them.

Again, this is one of those books that is jest crying to be a bedtimes story because of it's slow nature and colors. It leaves the reader with the idea that all is right with the world which is a great bedtime feeling.

Who should read this book? Everyone.

I think this fellow got kicked out of new staff for making up fake quotes in his articles. Well, all is forgiven when you're not going to see someone again I guess. Where ever he is now, I hope life treats him well.

The Last King of Angkor Wat by Graeme Base Book Reivew

'The Last King of Angkor Wat' by Graeme Base is a book about a
group of animals who all think they would be great kings. They are met by a wise old elephant who teaches them about kingliness.

This is a great bedtime story with rich imagery and a fun story that is not to stimulating. It teaches the moral of being well rounded as a person.

There are some images in this book that may scare small children like a large snake and so forth. Past that this is a great bedtime story.

Who should read this book? People who like animals.

Arrow to the Sun by Gerald McDermott

Back in high school I preformed a theatrical poetic reading of
'Arrow to the Sun' but not the version by Gerald McDermott.
This is a story of the Pueblo people native to North America, and the artwork is in the same style as the culture this story derives from.

That said, I feel that a more in depth interpretation or at least a bank of facts at the end of the book would have made this a better read. I was left wanting more, and for a book this large I think more could have been given. There were some pages where no words were present and we the reader just had to fill in the story. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just that there could have been more.

Who should read this book? Everyone

Parsley by Ludwig Bemelmans

'Parsley' by Ludwig Bemelmans starts out as the story of a tree that
is not named Parsley, but it befriends a deer who eats Parsley, and then is named Parsley.

This is something of a reverse of the story of 'Bambi' which was originally a German story. It has deer and a hunter and a woods.

Who should read this book? People who like deer.

Make Money! Wash Cars by Bridget Heos

'Make Money! Wash Cars' is another in the Make Money line by
Bridget Heos. To be honest the books are getting redundant at this point. These books go over the math of starting a child business. I say 'child business' because this isn't a legitimate business and no mention of taxes is made.

Every one of these stories goes into the math of the business. They promote a strong work ethic and encourage children to get things for themselves.

On the other hand, we are looking at young children who are going out on their own in this day and age and it is up to the parent to decide if that is a safe thing to teach children.

Points for this book are that it mentions the environment, talks about not doing jobs you are unqualified for, and promotes teamwork and fair play.

Who should read this book? People who live in safe places.

Wasn't it Fun - 1998 Yearbook Signature

Richard,
Wasn't new staff fun! I thought it was! Sorry for putting you through all that crap... but it was fun! Good pictures! Have fun in your future. Good Luck!

Bye!

Yeah, buddy, I guess it was fun. It was as fun as it could me with me having an illness that my old man wouldn't see to.

I had a short temper in high school, and this fellow was a News Staff editor who worked under me. If I saw him today I would probably say that I was sorry for being so hard on him.

The Hair of Zoe Fleefenbacher Goes to School by Laurie Halse Anderson Book Review

'The Hair of Zoe Fleefenbacher Goes to School' by Laurie Halse
Anderson is a book about a girl with hair that had a mind of its own. Her hair is the kind of thing that just will not do as it is told and it has to be doing something.

This is something of a book about making the best of a bad situation. Given the fact that in the real world hair does not have a mind of it's own I would have to question the applications of this kind of situation. As Zoe is a normal girl other than her hair it doesn't represent a disablement or anything of that nature. The theme of tolerance is somewhat absent from the book.

Who should read this book: Folks who don't think too hard.

Locomotive by Brian Floca

'Locomotive' by Brian Floca is a book about at train ride back in
the old west or American Civil War era. It gives you a slice of life from back when the steam engine ruled the world. This is a great bedtime story told without characters that is mostly informative.

In addition to the story at the end of the book there is a large section that gives a good deal of railroad history. It talks about Abraham Lincoln and his Transcontinental Rail Road. It answered a few questions I had like 'what happened to the golden railroad spikes?'

Who should read this book: People who like trains.
